Senior General Min Aung Hlaing holds talks with Singaporean Ambassador to Myanmar H.E.Mr. Robert Chua.
Nay Pyi Taw May 3
The Tatmadaw is working hard to achieve peace with the faith that there should not be armed conflicts in a democracy; and the country will be successful if there is negotiation and mutual respect between respective stakeholders, said Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Min Aung Hlaing as he met Singaporean Ambassador to Myanmar H.E.Mr. Robert Chua at Bayintnaung Parlour in Nay Pyi Taw at 3 pm yesterday.
Also present at the call were Chief of the General Staff (Army,Navy and Air) General Mya Tun Oo, Lt-Gen Soe Htut from the Office of the Commander-in-Chief(Army) and personnel of Singapore Embassy to Myanmar.
The Singaporean ambassador discussed Singapore’s senior minister Mr Goh Chok Tong’s discussions on Myanmar’s reform process during his visit to the country. He stressed the need for collaboration among all institutions in Myanmar for the success of national reconciliation process and stability and security of the country. He said he had been to every part of Myanmar and found that every ethnic group aspired to peace; and that peace could be achieved if everyone worked with a sense of common citizenship, dialogue, mutual understanding and forgiveness. He said he understood the important role of the Tatmadaw in Myanmar. He called on the internal forces to get united, saying the peace process is complicated and there are also external terrorist threats.
The Senior General said that Mr Goh Chok Tong had made recommendations; and that the military wanted to see the success of democracy which was chosen by the people, and had been cooperating in every possible sector. The ambassador will be able to review Myanmar’s prevailing conditions as he has served in the country for about 11 years. The constitution is drawn in the best way based on the country’s history, conditions of national races and the geographical location. It is not a perfect constitution and amendments are necessary. However, prompt action to amend it is impossible. It depends on state peace, stability and security that are essential requirements for the country. National reconciliation efforts must be made after priority has been given to the requirements of national races. Meanwhile, antigovernment attitudes and any vocal acts leading to misunderstanding of the State must be avoided. When it comes to the peace issue, the national races need to make their demands through political channel. The attitude that they will be secure only when they hold arms must also be discarded. Any instigation in the name of ethnic rights will badly harm national unity, said the Senior General.
Then, they cordially discussed promotion of relations and cooperation between the two militaries, sending of warships as exchange of goodwill visits, sending of Myanmar citizens to Singapore to do courses on management, administration and MA courses for international relations and other short-term courses and Myanmar’s participation in Shangri-La Dialogue to be held in Singapore.
