Philippines to import rice from Myanmar |

Cyclone-hit Philippines is planning to import rice from Myanmar, India and Pakistan, said an offi cial from Philippines Food Program.
Because of the recently-hit cyclone, Philippines is trying to import rice from Pakistan, India and Myanmar, he added. Philippines is the major rice importer in the world and is, now, negotiating with the embassy from the respective countries.
The domestic demand of rice is high in Philippines and Philippines has invited major rice exporting countries to sell rice.
Philippines imported 1.7 million tons of rice in 2014 and is expected to import about 1.6 million tons of rice in 2015.
Philippines has already negotiated to import 5 million tons of rice from Vietnam and Thailand.
Currently, China is daily importing 2500 tons of rice from Myanmar via Muse border because the demand is high in Yunnan State and the price of the rice rose 3 Yuan per bag according to the Muse market.
Myanmar has exported 1.8 million tons of rice to foreign countries and 1.1 million tons of rice to China via border in 2014-15 fiscal year according to the Ministry of Commerce. (447)
