Trailers banned at Alaungdaw Kathapa Pagoda

Alaungdaw Kathapa Pagoda Board of Trustees said it will ban the transportation of pilgrims with the use of trailers in Sagaing Region beginning this year.

An official from the board said: “We have designated the number of pilgrims based on the types of cars for the safety of pilgrims. We have fixed 45 passengers for a big express, 35 for a small express, 25 for a Dyna, 12 each for a Hilux and a light truck and six each for a jeep and a Sunny. The board willnot allow overloaded vehicles to go ahead. We have totally banned the transport of passengers with the use of trailers.”

Alaungdaw Kathapa Pagoda Festival will be launched in Sagaing Region in January. Kapaing camp will open at 4 am and close at 5 pm for the cars. A team comprising a police officer, a member from the board and a monk will supervise the opening and closing of the gate on a monthly and rotation basis.

Sagaing Region Parliament MP U Tun Tun Win representing Kani Township Constituency said: “A monk and a board member will supervise road repairs and safety measures. A plan is under way to upgrade the nine-mile-long Alaungdaw Kathapa road into a tarred or concrete one and to build a suspension bridge, under the guidance of the Popa Monastery Sayadaw. In addition, the board of trustees decided to buy a medium backhoe and repair the loader at the coordination meeting held on November 4.
