Admission fee to Bagan continues to be charge in dollar

Yangon December 4

Admission fees will be continued to be charged in dollar on foreign visitors to Bagan Archaeological Zone as the plan to charge them in local currency kyat is still under discussion, said Deputy Director General U Thein Lwin of Bagan Department of Archaeology, National Museum and Library.

The department originally planned to charge admission fee in local currency, 25,000 kyat, on foreign visitors instead of greenback, $ 20, as of November 1. But then, further discussions are still needed to introduce the new charging system, said U Thein Lwin.

“We still have to coordinate with concerned departments. We’ll inform the tour operators in advance when we are ready to charge in local currency,” he said.

The department has charged $ 20 per head admission fees on foreign visitors as of January this year.

“Under the current exchange rate, it is reasonable that 25,000 kyat will be charged instead of $ 20. Compared to other countries, the admission fee is not much for foreign travelers. It is a reasonable amount,” said U Phyi Wai Yar Zar, managing-director of All Asian Travel & Tour.
