Japanese companies to invest in Myanmar’s agricultural research sector

Japanese companies Yanmar and Mitsui & Co will invest in agricultural research in Japan-backed Thilawa Special Economic Zone in Yangon’s Thanlyin Township.

Yanmar, a diesel engine producer and distributor, will provide technical assistance for Myanmar with mechanical engineering. This is the fi rst investment by Yanmar in Myanmar in partnership with Mitsui & Co.

The two companies will invest in some of agricultural research centres in Myanmar, and the foreign joint venture will be based in Thilawa Special Economic Zone.

The two companies are keen to participate in agricultural modernization and development of domestic food production in Myanmar.

Executive director Takeshi Terada of Yanmar Myanmar Co Ltd said: “Myanmar is already ranked seventh in rice production in the world. And the demand for agricultural equipment has increased and there is a need to fulfill the growing demand to boost the country’s agro-economy.”

Yanmar Myanmar Co will hold 60 percent of stake and Mitsui & Co 40 percent in the joint venture, said chief executive officer Ryotaro Sumi of Mitsui & Co. Mitsui & Co, which produces and distributes agricultural equipment, entered Myanmar market in March, 2016 and currently boasts a workforce of around 100 employees.

Over 2,200 job opportunities created from three permitted enterprises

A total of 2,217 job opportunities have been created from three enterprises permitted by the Myanmar Investment Commission.

The three enterprises receiving permits at the Myanmar Investment Commission meeting held on 1stDecember are in the following industries: garment manufacturing using the Cutting, Making and Packing (CMP) system; manufacturing, distribution and marketing of metal cans; and power system installation and maintenance of telecommunication equipment services.

Kingsrich (Myanmar) Fashion Limited, a wholly foreign owned enterprise, will invest in garment manufacturing in Shwe Pyi Thar industrial zone, Shwe Pyi Thar Township, Yangon Region. Crown Beverage Cans Myanmar Limited will invest in the manufacturing, distribution and marketing of cans in Yangon industrial zone with a joint venture. Linfra Limited will put foreign investments in power system installation and maintenance of telecommunication equipment services in Hlaingthaya Township.

The Myanmar Investment Commission (MIC) reviews the investment proposals on the basis of the opinions and assessments of the region and state governments concerned to check whether the proposal meets the criteria before approval.
