Officers, other ranks punished in connection with killing of 10 Bengalis

The Myawady Daily and Myawady TV on 10 January, 2018, reported about the Tatmadaw investigation into extrajudicial killings of 10 Bengali terrorists without legal arrest, persecution and trial near the graveyard of Pae Yone (Na Ta La) Village in Inn Din Village-tract in Rakhine State’s Maungtaw Township by some ethnic residents of the village and security forces in response to grievances and resentment of local ethnic people. The Tatmadaw investigation team led by Lt-Gen Aye Win of the Offi ce of the Commander-in-Chief (Army) interrogated 21 Tatmadaw offi cers and other ranks, three members of Myanmar Police Force (MPF), 13 members of No 8 Security Force, six departmental personnel and six residents of Inn Din village from 20 December 2017 to 2 January 2018, and concluded that it was an extrajudicial killing.

Legal action is being taken against the MPF members and civilians under the respective laws, procedures and rules. Seven officials and other ranks of the Tatmadaw who have to abide by the Defence Services Act and rules were found to have violated the Article 71 of the Defence Services Act because they god involved in the murder, a civilian crime.

Four officers were condemned and dismissed and sentenced to 10 years in civilian prison. Three of other ranks were demoted to private, and dismissed and sentenced to 10 years in civilian prison.
