According to experts, climate change is the result of the dwindling number of trees. Every global country is facing this phenomenon.Country-wise conservation and protection endeavours with conviction will mitigate the severe effects of climate change. Myanmar is also facing huge climate-related losses.We will be able to overcome such losses if every military unit, town, village and person make collective efforts with devotion, said Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Min Aung Hlaing at the second monsoon tree-planting ceremony of the Office of the Commander-in-Chief (Army,Navy and Air) for conserving the natural environment of Yezin Dam held near the dam in Zeyathiri Township, here at 7 am yesterday.

Present on the occasion were Senior General Min Aung Hlaing and wife Daw Kyu Kyu Hla, Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief(Army) Vice-Senior General Soe Win, the Union Minister for Home Affairs and wife,the Union Minister for Defence and wife, the Union Minister for Border Affairs and wife,the Chief of the General Staff (Army, Navy and Air) and wife, the Commander-in-Chief(Navy) and wife, the Commander-in-Chief(Air) and wife, senior military officers of the Office of the Commander-in-Chief and wives,the commander of Nay Pyi Taw Command and wife, senior officer trainees of the National Defence College, officers, other ranks and families from offices and departments of the Office of the Commander-in-Chief (Army).In his address, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing said trees have been planted annually in the environs of Yezin Dam since 2011 and over 100,000 teak, perennial trees, shade trees and windbreaks have been planted within seven years. The number of trees planted by the whole Tatmadaw is in millions. Some are thriving, but some died due to many causes including weakness in the plantation method and forest fires. As it takes time,efforts should be made for the thriving of trees, the success of the plantations and to yield benefits.

Then, the Senior General continued to say it is known that today’s world population has exceeded more than seven billion with growing number of population daily. Humans use trees for their living and foods. They cut forests for fi rewood as well as cultivable lands. So, it needs to carry out reforestation for substitution of new plants in the old ones.On the other hand, they need to use trees in actual amount while conserving forests and plantations. More than 70 percent of the total population is living in rural area in the nation while over 29 percent of people are residing in the urban area. People from many rural regions are facing the problems of electricity. Even though they get electricity,they cannot use electricity in cooking depending on their incomes. So, they rely on firewood and charcoal. They also spend their incomes on their farmlands. As such, it is necessary for re-growing substitute trees,firewood plantations as well as windbreaks without fail. Not only every military units but also all towns and villages need to grow trees. The Senior General urged them to plant trees themselves while disseminating knowledge of growing trees to people from their environs.

Next, the Senior General and wife planted the teak tree in commemoration of the monsoon tree-planting ceremony. Afterwards, the Vice-Senior General, the Union Ministers and wives, senior military officers of the Office of the Commander-in-Chief (Army)and wives, and those present grew trees at the designated places.

Then, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing and party viewed participation of officers, other ranks and families in collective cultivation of trees.

Today, families of the Office of the Commander-in-Chief (Army, Navy and Air) planted 8,000 teak trees at the second monsoon tree-planting ceremony for 2017.

As part of efforts to conserve Yezin Dam and its environs, families of the Office of the Commander-in-Chief (Army, Navy and Air) have been holding the monsoon tree-planting ceremonies yearly. They have grown trees 20 times from 2011 to date. So far, they have grown 100,950 trees in various species including teak, ironwood, gum-kino,mango, tamarind, jack fruit, neem, Belleric myrobalan, cassia, raintree, laburnum, gold mohur, star-fl ower, and Mesua ferrea.

Likewise, military commands held the second monsoon tree-planting ceremonies this morning. The commander, officers,officers, other ranks and families planted 25,844 trees in Nay Pyi Taw Command, 27,134 trees in Northern Command, 11,022 trees in North-East Command, 26,609 trees in Eastern Command, 11,780 trees in Central East Command, 35,523 trees in Triangle Region Command, 41,490 trees in South-East Command, 18,225 trees in Coastal Region Command, 52,086 trees in Yangon Command, 18,903 trees in South-West Command, 9,757 trees in Western Command, 20,058 trees in North-West Command, 52,098 trees in Central Command and 35,505 trees in Southern Command. The whole Tatmadaw grew 394,034 trees at today’s ceremonies.
