Three mounds in Bagan to be examined with non-invasive method

Three mounds of what are believed to be the court chambers will be examined in Bagan Archaeological Zone with noninvasive method, according to the Department of Archaeology, National Museum and Library of Ministry of Religious Affairs and Culture.

Technicians from Milan Polytechnic University and personnel of Ministry of Religious Affairs and Culture has planned to start the examination in the middle of this month.

“We will examine the mounds of court chambers first,” said an official of the Department of Archaeology, National Museum and Library in Bagan.

Non-invasive method was also used in examining three Pyu cities which were recorded in UNESCO World Heritage List in 2014, the first of Myanmar heritage sites to be listed in UN cultural heritage list.

There are at present five mounds in Bagan, two of them have already been excavated. Bagan houses stupas, temples and other Buddhist religious buildings constructed from the 9th to 11th centuries—a period in which some 50 Buddhist kings ruled the Bagan Dynasty. There are more than 3,000 stupas and temples in the area.

Myanmar plans to nominate the Bagan Archaeological Zone for UNESCO’s list of culturally significant sites in 2017 for reconsideration the following year.
