Tourists to Ayeyarwady dolphins increase



Yangon June 5

The joint efforts between Ayeyarwady dolphin-based tourism Ayeyarwady Dolphin Conservation Group and Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) for conservation of Ayeyarwady dolphins (above) have delivered a significant result.

The Ayeyarwady dolphin-based tour was introduced in 2011. Due to the collaborative efforts between dolphin conservation group under Fisheries department and Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), the international travelers of have doubled now.

Meanwhile, villages in dolphin conservation areas have seen an increase in income through the sale of local products and souvenirs as a result. Myanmar Tour Guides Association (Mandalay) has been providing tour guides in the area so that they can better explain about the tour to travelers.

In December 2015, an area stretching from Mandalay to Kyaukmuayng was designated as Ayeyarwady dolphin conservation area where 24 dolphins make their home and there are a total of 68 dolphins in the area between Mandalay and Bhamo, according to Ayeyarwady dolphin conservation group. (443)
